America’s Teens Set to Dream Big at 2024 Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World Resort

Exclusive Walt Disney World Resort mentoring event fosters dreams of Black students and teens from underrepresented communities; 100 outstanding students from New York to California to be part of the multi-day event in April.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Jan. 15, 2024) – They want to build rocket ships that soar through the galaxy; teach people nationwide how to make better nutritional choices; and spread even more magic at The Most Magical Place on Earth. They are high school students from the 2024 class of Disney Dreamers Academy, and they all have the same thing in common – Big Dreams!

The new class of 100 students from around the country was revealed today on the Martin Luther King Day holiday by Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, where the annual mentoring program was created to broaden career awareness and inspire teens from Black and underrepresented communities to dream beyond their wildest imaginations.

The selected students were featured during a live TV segment on ABC’s “Good Morning America.’’ The segment highlighted one of the selected students,16-year-old Sophia of South Orange, New Jersey, who is involved with her local YMCA, Girls Scouts, orchestra, lacrosse and the math team, and aspires to become an aerospace engineer.

The full list of students is available at www.DisneyDreamersAcademy.com.

At the four-day program at Walt Disney World, Sophia and the other Disney Dreamers will engage with business leaders, Disney executives, celebrities and educators, who will immerse them in workshops and seminars designed to supercharge their career dreams. The students will also explore a wide range of career disciplines while also learning essential skills, such as effective communication techniques, leadership and networking strategies.

And, of course, they will spend plenty of time experiencing the magic of Walt Disney World.

“We eagerly anticipate the arrival of another exceptional group of high schoolers from all corners of the country for our 17th year!” remarked Tracey Powell, Senior Vice President of Consumer Insight, Measurement & Analytics and Executive Champion of Disney Dreamers Academy. “These future leaders are poised to embark on a transformative journey, gaining an experience of a lifetime that will propel them towards achieving their dreams.”

Each year, the Disney Dreamers are selected from thousands of applicants who answer essay questions about their personal stories and dreams for the future. The students and a parent or guardian enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to Walt Disney World. The program is an important part of Disney’s commitment to support diverse communities by encouraging the next generation to think and dream big.

Since 2008, Disney Dreamers Academy has inspired more than 1,600 students from across the country by fueling their dreams and showing them a world of possibilities as they prepare for their futures. In the years following, graduates have become storytellers, artists, engineers, innovators, journalists and more, and have transitioned into mentors to the Disney Dreamers who follow them.

From 3D Printed Remote-controlled Toys to Tasty Popsicles: Even Disney Animals Are Having Fun

Technology and innovative thinking enhance quality of life and encourage natural behaviors for animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla (Dec. 22, 2023) – By employing the latest in 3D printing, motorized mechanics, and innovative uses for recycled items, the creative minds at Walt Disney Imagineering have collaborated with the animal care team at Walt Disney World Resort to roll out new enrichment opportunities for the animals that call the park home.

Hundreds of unique species depend on the team at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment daily, not only for their ongoing health and development, but also to provide mental and physical enrichment. By adding in the creativity of Walt Disney Imagineering, the teams continue to innovate new enrichment activities together, developing imaginative techniques and inventions to engage the animals and encourage natural behaviors for mental and physical stimulation, ultimately enhancing overall wellbeing.

Driving Innovation with 3D Printing

Innovation is key when it comes to creating complex enrichment opportunities for animals such as cheetahs. Recently, teams across Walt Disney World created a highly innovative form of enrichment known as a cheetah ball. This ball is motorized and allows cheetahs to chase a moving object as they would in the wild. With the help of animal keepers and a remote control, the ball helps to engage the animal’s natural instincts to hunt and run. Parts of the motorized cheetah ball were created using a 3D printer and the help of a few engineers. You can see the ball and cheetahs in action on season two of “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” now streaming on Disney+.

Creative Enrichment for All Animals at Walt Disney World Resort

The animal care team tailors enrichment to the unique needs of every animal at Walt Disney World. For example, lions hunt as a vital part of their natural behavior; as a result, enrichment is created to encourage specific behaviors, including stalking, pawing, biting and clawing. To bring out those instincts, the team created a warthog-shaped ice sculpture designed to spark their curiosity. The ice sculpture was then coated with mud obtained from the warthog habitat to engage the lions’ sense of smell too. This form of enrichment not only provides lions the opportunity to mimic hunting behavior in their habitats but also serves as a means for helping the animals to cool off.

New Uses for Recycled Items

Recycling existing materials is another innovative way of creating enrichment. Great examples include recycled water bottles and coolers turned into warthog feeders, faux “logs” that store treats for primates and old fire hoses woven into different shapes, making them the perfect enrichment for rhinos.

Some of these enrichment items used by the animal care team are made of recycled objects guests would once see or use in resorts across Walt Disney World. For example, the troop of western lowland gorillas receive bed sheets that are no longer in use to build nests to rest in, similar to how a dog would use a blanket or dog bed. This added layer of comfort also encourages playfulness among the gorillas.

Seasonal Enrichment: Even Animals Love the Holidays

This holiday season, guests watched while gorillas opened holiday presents containing some of their favorite foods. The wrapped boxes included different food such as popcorn, alfalfa hay, currants and oats. Enrichment like this encourages natural behavior such as foraging, according to Angela Miller, behavioral husbandry manager. “They would naturally be looking for food all over the forest and having to open things, look under things, and these particular behaviors are the ones we are trying to encourage,” explained Miller. In addition to being a treat for the gorillas, guests also enjoyed watching the primates interact with the packages.

For more information on how Disney cares for animals and helps protect species in the wild, visit DisneyAnimals.com. And seasons one and two of “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” streaming on Disney+, give viewers unprecedented access to some of the most rare and beautiful creatures on the planet and a chance to meet the animal care experts who have formed remarkable bonds with the park’s thousands of animals.

Here are just some of the key holiday offerings guests won’t want to miss:

EPCOT

Guests can check out Walt Disney World’s newest nighttime spectacular from Disney Live Entertainment, “Luminous The Symphony of Us.” The new show includes dazzling fireworks, fountains and lights as well as music, which is a major part of the show. Among the many talented voices contributing to the score is singer/songwriter Shelea, one of the show’s lead vocalists. Her voice can be heard on the two new original songs that bookend the show, with “Heartbeat Symphony” at the beginning and “Beating of Our Hearts” at the end.

The EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays presented by AdventHealth runs Nov. 24 through Dec. 30 offering festive fun throughout World Showcase and beyond with special live entertainment, cultural dining opportunities and more. One of the highlights of the festival is the Candlelight Processional, a beloved Disney Parks holiday tradition. It returns with a lineup of celebrity narrators telling the Christmas story along with performances by a Disney choir and a live orchestra.

Nine new celebrity voices join the ranks this year, including “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown (Dec. 19-20), Broadway star Jordan Fisher (Dec. 21-23) and Broadway headliner and Emmy-nominated actress Audra McDonald (Dec. 27-28).

Another returning entertainment favorite is “JOYFUL! A Celebration of the Season.” This uplifting performance of gospel music mixed with jazz and R&B celebrates Christmas and Kwanzaa with multiple performances daily on the World Showcase Plaza Stage.

 Food & Beverage

Guests looking to tempt their tastebuds shouldn’t miss Holiday Kitchens throughout EPCOT, which feature cultural holiday fare from around the world, including mouth-watering options such as the New Year’s traditional treat Hoppin’ John. This southern dish is a tasty combination of black-eyed peas, ham hocks and kale served over rice with cornbread crumbles. This comforting dish is served alongside Blackened Catfish and Comeback Sauce at American Adventure pavilion.

There are also delicious tastes and sips made with Black-owned liquor brands at various Disney resorts. For instance, the Belle Vue Lounge at Disney’s BoardWalk Resort offers Sparkling Hibiscus, which blends Sorel Hibiscus Liqueur by renowned microdistiller Jackie Summers with a sparkling grapefruit mixer. Additionally, the Pineapple Mule, which features Uncle Nearest Tennessee Whiskey, is available at multiple locations across property and continues to be a favorite among guests.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

During the new Disney Jollywood Nights, guests can stop by Theater of the Stars for “Disney Holidays in Hollywood,” a new holiday variety show. It features characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, plus Princess Tiana, singers, dancers and live jazz music.

Disney Springs

While shopping and dining, guests can take part in the Disney Springs Christmas Tree Stroll. There are 19 Disney-themed trees on display throughout the four “neighborhoods” that make up Disney Springs. And this year, guests can feel connected to Princess Tiana with The Princess and the Frog Tree.

In addition, contemporary Afropop band Wassalou performs throughout the season to celebrate Kwanzaa.

And if guests want to extend the Disney holiday vibes beyond the parks, there’s still time to participate in a new holiday-themed virtual running series – the runDisney Virtual 12Ks of Christmas. Through Dec. 31, runners can sign up for the three 4K virtual races (12Ks total which can be run anywhere) and receive medals that can double as Christmas ornaments. Registration information is at www.runDisney.com/virtual.

New Study: Disney Generates $40 Billion in Annual Economic Impact in Florida and Over Quarter of a Million Jobs

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Nov. 14, 2023) – Walt Disney World Resort, one of the world’s most visited vacation destinations, generated $40 billion in economic impact across the state and more than a quarter of a million total jobs in fiscal year 2022, according to a new study from Oxford Economics announced today.

The study found that Disney, which has fueled Florida’s economy, tourism and small businesses for more than half a century, generated the following across the year:

  • $40.3 billion in total statewide economic impact.
  • 263,000 direct and indirect jobs – 1 out of every 32 jobs in the state.
    • This figure includes Disney’s workforce of 82,000 across the state. Within Central Florida, Disney directly supports 12%, or 1-in-8, of all jobs. For every direct job on-site at Disney, an additional 1.7 jobs are supported across Florida.
    • Without Disney’s statewide job impact, Florida’s unemployment would jump from 3% to 5.4%, which would take Florida from the 21st lowest unemployment rate among all 50 states to the second highest unemployment rate in the country.
    • Disney revenues and off-site visitor spending contributed to $12.1 billion in total labor income in fiscal year 2022.
  • $6.6 billion in tax revenue, including $3.1 billion in annual state and local tax revenue generated by Disney, visitors, employees and third-party businesses – helping to fund local schools, law enforcement, public safety, parks, roadways and more throughout Central Florida.
  • 2,500 Florida-based small businesses contracted to supply products and services to Disney World.
    • Part of the more than 8,500 small businesses across the country contracted by The Walt Disney Company.

The study, which was commissioned by Disney, also reflects the economic impact of Disney Signature Experiences in Florida, including Disney Vacation Club and Disney Cruise Line.

The results are for fiscal year 2022, prior to the Reedy Creek Improvement District becoming the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District with the appointment of a new board.

This announcement comes as the attraction industry convenes in Orlando this week for IAAPA Expo 2023, the premier global event that brings together industry professionals to shape the future of guest experiences. This week also marks the 58th anniversary since the now-famous press conference in Orlando where Walt and Roy Disney announced their “Florida Project” alongside then-Florida Governor Haydon Burns.

“Disney is an economic catalyst to the state of Florida generating billions in economic activity, either directly, or indirectly through its supply chain and the spending of employees,” said Adam Sacks, President of Tourism Economics, a division of Oxford Economics. “Disney is also vital to the funding of public services, as it generated taxes of $6.6 billion in 2022, including state and local taxes of $3.1 billion.”

“I am incredibly proud of how Disney has created meaningful change and benefitted people’s lives in Florida for generations, not just in establishing our area’s theme park industry, but also in how we have worked with other sectors across the state to do the same,” said Jeff Vahle, President, Walt Disney World Resort. “The numbers speak for themselves on why Disney is so important to fueling jobs, the economy and tourism throughout our region, and the future investments we’re looking to make will continue to provide even more opportunities for Floridians.”

Disney Creates Jobs in Florida

Disney’s operations power a massive small business ecosystem in the state. The company works with 2,500 small businesses here in Florida and thousands more across the country who employ workers and provide a wide range of goods and services – from the local painters who help maintain Cinderella Castle, to the family-run vendor who supplies some of the sweet treats served in the theme parks and more. Over 160 third-party businesses also operate on Disney’s property, from restauranteurs to hoteliers, retailers and more, providing opportunities for even more local Florida-based businesses to serve the millions of guests who visit Walt Disney World each year.

Disney Is One of the Largest Taxpayers in the Region

In fiscal year 2022, Disney paid and collected a combined $1.1 billion in state and local taxes to Orange and Osceola Counties and the state of Florida, as well as to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The Florida State Legislature established this special district, formerly known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District, in 1967 to help provide services, including power, water, roads and fire protection for the 47-square miles of Walt Disney World Resort.

This district was a cost-effective mechanism throughout its history in ensuring the tax burden for these services did not fall on Orange and Osceola County residents. It allowed Disney to efficiently invest tens of billions of dollars in Florida over the past several decades by maintaining the highest development and service standards on Disney property.

Decade of Unprecedented Growth for Disney in Florida

No other theme park destination spans the size and scale of Walt Disney World, which is nearly twice the size of the island of Manhattan with four theme parks, over 25 Resort hotels, two water parks, a world-class shopping, dining and entertainment district, and more. According to the Themed Entertainment Association, Walt Disney World is the most visited theme park destination in the world.

The significant growth of Disney’s economic impact in the state comes after an unprecedented period of growth and expansion across Walt Disney World over the last decade, including:

  • New theme park lands themed to Disney’s incomparable library of intellectual property, including franchises such as Star Wars, Toy Story and AVATAR.
  • More attractions and experiences based on world-beloved characters and stories like Mickey Mouse, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ratatouille and Beauty and the Beast.
  • The growth of Disney’s onsite transportation network with the innovative Disney Skyliner gondola system.
  • New resort hotels including more Disney Vacation Club properties and value options for families like Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.
  • Nearly doubling the size of the Disney Springs shopping and dining district to include dozens of additional tenants and small businesses.

Since its launch in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has called Florida home and contributed to the state economic growth and job creation with a year-round homeport in Port Canaveral. With a current fleet of five ships and three more planned, Disney Cruise Line is currently in the midst of the largest expansion in the cruise line’s history. As part of its expansion plans, Disney Cruise Line recently celebrated the opening of its second dedicated cruise terminal and year-round homeport in Florida at Port Everglades in Broward County.

In addition, Disney has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to local nonprofits throughout its history and last month announced another round of donations totaling $1.5 million going to 19 organizations making a difference in the arts, education, hunger relief and other philanthropic efforts.

In fiscal year 2022, Disney cast members also donated more than 233,000 volunteer hours in Florida.

Disney Turbocharges Investment in Parks

The Walt Disney Company recently announced it is developing plans to accelerate and expand investment in its Experiences segment to nearly double capital expenditures over the course of approximately 10 years to roughly $60 billion, including by investing in expanding and enhancing domestic and international parks and cruise line capacity.

If history is any indication, when Disney invests in Florida, its residents and businesses benefit. To learn more about Disney in Florida, visit DisneyFlorida.com, follow on Facebook @WDWCastandCommunity or on Instagram @wdw.ambassador.

Methodology: To quantify the economic impact of Disney in Florida, Oxford Economics prepared a comprehensive model using multiple primary and secondary data sources to quantify the impacts arising from multiple channels of spending attributable to Disney. Impact modeling was based on an IMPLAN Input-Output (I-O) model for the State of Florida, and the results of this study show the scope of Disney’s impact in terms of revenue and operational spending, as well as total economic impacts, including total business sales, employment, household income, and fiscal (tax) impacts.

U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Fly Over Walt Disney World Resort

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2023) As part of Disney’s enduring respect for those who serve in the military and their families, this morning Walt Disney World Resort hosted the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team for a flyover of Magic Kingdom Park and EPCOT. The event marks the arrival of National Veterans and Military Families Month in November.

The Thunderbirds showcased their capabilities with a first-time flyover of two Walt Disney World theme parks. A second pass over Magic Kingdom featured their famous delta maneuver, with the jets accelerating rapidly over Cinderella Castle in different directions giving the appearance of a fireworks display.

Timing of this flight was ideal as Disney marks its 100th anniversary and the Thunderbirds celebrate 70 years of inspiring the next generation of patriotism. This special flyover is the latest example of Walt Disney World Resort’s long tradition of celebrating members of the United States military.

Guests can grab that perfect holiday selfie with these icons from decades past. PhotoPass photographers will be there to capture the moment, and complimentary digital downloads of Disney PhotoPass photos captured during the event are included with the price of the ticket.**

New ‘Fits for the Fete

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and friends are donning new outfits exclusively for this glitzy celebration. They invite guests to do the same and join them for photos in a colorful setting from the golden age of Hollywood. Disney art directors, show producers and designers worked together to land on just the right combination of colors and fabric, inspired by palettes of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios will also once again present Sunset Seasons Greetings nightly throughout the season. Each evening The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is magically transformed into an array of holiday scenes as snow falls along Sunset Boulevard.

Fractal Frenzy: NEW Frozen Holiday Surprise at Magic Kingdom Park

At Magic Kingdom Park, “Frozen” friends from Arendelle are conjuring up something remarkable for the holidays. The new Frozen Holiday Surprise brings together Olaf and more than 100 of his Snowgie siblings who attempt to add festive decor to Cinderella Castle. With Anna and Kristoff at her side, Queen Elsa adds sparkling finishing touches, transforming the castle into a shimmering crystallized palace – a look that will remain throughout each evening.

Bringing this new spectacle to life is no small feat, as lighting designers, video technicians, composers and a full orchestra worked together to create this enchanting new entertainment experience.

Debuting Nov. 7, “Frozen Holiday Surprise” will occur nightly during the holiday season.

Families and kids of all ages can also enjoy Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Now in its 40th year, this specially ticketed event has become a holiday tradition for many. Featuring a dazzling parade, fireworks, complimentary sweet treats and so much more, it’s warm-hearted, family-friendly fun at Magic Kingdom on 25 select nights Nov. 9-Dec. 22.

Delicious Doings: EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays

For an international holiday flavor, EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays presented by AdventHealth is the place to be. The stage is set with spectacular decor around every corner, and entertainment fills the air from celebrity narrators reciting the Christmas story each night to time-honored traditions from countries around the world.

And no holiday celebration would be complete without tasty treats.

The festival culinary team has been hard at work for nearly a year, dreaming up the menu and testing new recipes.  More than 15 Holiday Kitchens will celebrate the diversity of holiday traditions with comfort foods that inspire warm memories.

Because ensuring a delicious encounter with every bite is top of mind for the team, thorough testing is imperative before massive production begins. How massive? The culinary team has historically baked more than 250,000 cookies in just five weeks for the event’s signature Holiday Cookie Stroll.

This year will bring several “firsts” to the festival. Luminous the Sympony of Us is an all-new fireworks-and-laser spectacular that will debut December 5, 2023. And, with EPCOT being home to The Walt Disney Company’s 100thanniversary celebration, guests will find beautiful holiday decor at the park entrance commemorating the Disney100 celebration.

EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays begins Nov. 24.

Comfort & Joy: Gingerbread Galore at Disney Resort Hotels

Guests often gaze in fascination at the larger-than-life gingerbread displays that appear each holiday season at Disney Resort Hotels. Culinary teams spend up to seven months planning and building the displays. For example, the culinary team at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa starts mixing fragrant dough in May, letting it cure a full two months before it is baked. Individual shapes, from shingles to Mickey cookies, are baked and decorated throughout the summer and then stored for “construction” in November. The house itself takes three days to build.

This year, guests will once again be able to enjoy the stunning works of culinary art – including a new display – in six resort locations:

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Disney’s Beach Club Resort
  • Disney’s BoardWalk Resort
  • Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • Disney’s Yacht Club Resort (featuring a new display)

More Merriment: Holidays Around the “World”

Disney Springs is THE place to shop, dine and play amidst a wonderland of beautiful decor and culinary delights. The 120-acre entertainment, retail and dining district will be in full holiday swing beginning Nov. 10. Those seeking festive fun should save time to visit Santa Claus at Once Upon a Toy and take in the Disney Springs Christmas Tree Stroll presented by AdventHealth. Nineteen Disney-themed trees will be on display throughout the four “neighborhoods” that make up Disney Springs. Plan at least one nighttime visit to experience snowfall in Town Center.

Cheerful decor and festive flotillas are holiday highlights at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. In addition to meeting with favorite Disney characters and Santa himself, guests can interact with a Merry Menagerie of life-size, artisan-sculpted animal puppets daily on Discovery Island. The park’s iconic Tree of Life also awakens each evening with a colorful tableau of wintry tales accompanied by a familiar musical score.

Making Magic: Walt Disney World Holiday Services

It takes more than Santa’s elves to transform the four theme parks, resort hotels, Disney Springs and other locations across the Walt Disney World Resort with dazzling decor. That incredible feat is the work of Holiday Services.

This team of designers, decorators and other professionals ready more than 600 trees and 1,700 wreaths and hang nearly nine miles of garland each year. In fact, as soon as one holiday season wraps up, the Holiday Services team begins preparing for the next.

Whether creating new items or making sure that existing decor remains merry and bright, these talented specialists ensure that the entire resort sparkles.

Cheery Mementos to Remember the Magic

There’s no better way to remember a visit to Walt Disney World than with the perfect souvenir, and holiday merchandise is a great way to show some holiday spirit or to keep the cheerful vibes alive after guests return home. Special holiday-themed attire, accessories, home decor and more can be purchased throughout the resort, with special collections available for both Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays.

Just like Moana’s friend the ocean, water here has a playful personality of its own, and guests can join in the fun by making music with “rain harps,” waving to jumping streams and creating a roaring ocean wave.

As guests walk along the trail, they will come across Te Fiti, who is seen protecting water as it travels through the water cycle. Guests might even discover beloved characters carved in the rock formations like Heihei, Pua and of course, Moana.

Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana joins new experiences such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Connections Café & Eatery and more as part of the EPCOT transformation. Additional upcoming transformative elements include the debut of a new Walt Disney statue called “Walt the Dreamer” at Dreamers Point and the World Celebration gardens with plenty of lush green space to enjoy.
