Walt Disney World Resort Expands Relationship with HP Into Youth Sports at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (July 29, 2010) – Walt Disney World Resort today announced an expansion to its long-term business relationship with HP, which now includes naming rights for the 165,000-square-foot fieldhouse at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Beginning today, the fieldhouse will be renamed with the HP brand and will feature several new high-tech elements designed to enhance the sports experience for the nearly 1.5 million athletes, coaches and fans who visit the complex each year.  HP also becomes the official imaging, printing and PC partner for ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the leading multi-sports venue in the nation.

The centerpiece of the soon to be renamed fieldhouse will be the HP Creation Zone where athletes, coaches and fans can download, design and enhance commemorative photos and images of their events, then immediately produce and print them onsite.  The HP Creation Zone will also include a retail area featuring a variety of imaging-related products and options for youth athletes and consumers, such as creating life-size posters of action photos, custom wallpaper coverings for the home and other photo keepsakes/memorabilia.

“HP’s innovative technologies further differentiate the athlete experience at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in ways that no other youth sports venue can match,” said Ken Potrock, senior vice president of Disney Sports Enterprises.  “The HP technological enhancements in the complex are just the latest in a growing number of technology-driven projects that are at the core of our growth strategy, which centers around continually elevating the sports experience for our athletes, coaches and fans.”

There will also be an HP internet “café” capability inside the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Grill featuring HP TouchSmart PCs.  Individual stations will offer online access to a variety of sites, including ESPN.com, ESPNRISE.com, ESPNWWOS.com, Disney.com, Disneyworld.com and others.

The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Welcome Center, an onsite concierge facility, will offer kiosks that also feature HP TouchSmart PCs.  The kiosks, which will also be located at additional locations throughout the complex, will enable athletes and fans to access and print a wide range of sports event information, including field assignments and schedule updates, as well as general Disney information and resources, such as dining reservations and vacation planning tools for theme parks, resorts and water parks.

“The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex continues HP’s decades-long collaboration with Disney to captivate audiences through technology innovation and digital entertainment,” said Michael Mendenhall, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at HP.  “The HP fieldhouse will deliver the ultimate sports environment, combining state-of-the-art athletic facilities with a rich, interactive technology experience to extend the spirit and passion of sports beyond the field of play.”

The fieldhouse accommodates virtually any indoor sport, including basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball, martial arts, team handball, roller hockey, cheerleading and dance, trampoline and tumbling, indoor tennis, etc., in addition to concerts and conventions.  Opened in 1997, the venue has a seating capacity of 5,500 and room for six full-size collegiate basketball courts.

HP’s presence at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex extends the company’s long-standing relationship with Disney, which began in 1940 when HP worked with Walt Disney to enhance the acoustics in movie theaters before the release of Disney’s “Fantasia” movie.  Currently, HP sponsors the MISSION: Space attraction at Epcot and is one of the sponsors of the Disneyland Dream Home at Disneyland Park.  Disney is one of HP’s largest customers and utilizes thousands of HP business PCs, servers and printers, in addition to technology services, business intelligence software and storage.

The expansion of the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex’s relationship with HP comes on the heels of the complex’s most comprehensive redesign since it opened in 1997.  In February 2010, the complex, which was already the leading multi-sport venue in the world, was re-imagined with the ESPN brand, bringing the signature elements of ESPN to the complex to create a one-of-a-kind sports experience that lets athletes, coaches and fans feel as if they’ve reached the big time with ESPN.

Curtain Call! By Popular Demand, ‘Main Street Electrical Parade’ Extended Indefinitely at Walt Disney World Resort

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (July 29, 2010)
With its glittery galaxy of 23 illuminated floats, 80 performers, and trademark synthesizer music sweetened with Disney theme songs, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” has been leaving Magic Kingdom guests aglow all summer.

Now, the cherished entertainment spectacular is being extended by popular demand, Walt Disney World announced today.

“The return of Disney’s ‘Main Street Electrical Parade’ to the Magic Kingdom has been an overwhelming success,” said Magic Kingdom Vice President Phil Holmes.  “Guests begin cheering as soon as they hear the opening fanfare and see those fantastic floats covered in lights.  The parade is a magical part of a visit to the Walt Disney World Resort, so we’re thrilled to be announcing we’re leaving the lights on.”

Fronted by a new lead float starring Tinker Bell, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” officially
bowed at Magic Kingdom June 6, 2010.

Beloved by generations, the parade anchors Disney’s multi-park “Summer Nightastic!” entertainment extravaganza of attractions and events.  Once “Summer Nightastic!” draws to a close on Aug. 14 as previously announced, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” will continue an open-ended run.

The iconic pageant of illuminated floats dates to 1972 when it first debuted at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and became an instant hit.

Prior to its current run in Florida, the parade last performed at Walt Disney World Resort from 1999 into 2001.  This summer, Magic Kingdom guests have been treated to all-new elements that continue in the encore phase of the run:
  • Tinker Bell leads the eye-filling procession, waving from the basket of a balloon floating gracefully above a magical garden shimmering in fairy light.
  • Pinocchio and the boys from the classic film’s Pleasure Island sequence join the parade, and Snow White joins the Seven Dwarfs on a diamond mine float.
  • There are new lighting effects, and the parade’s highly recognizable musical theme is brightened by new technology.

Beloved floats like the Honor America finale display
featuring the American flag and giant American eagle are among parade favorites, along with popular characters such as Alice, Mickey Mouse and Goofy.

Especially Good News for Florida Residents

The extension will enable Florida Resident Seasonal and Weekday Select Passholders to experience the parade on their passes. And with the ability to sign on for a new monthly payment program, Florida Resident Passholders can enjoy the parade and so much more Disney theme park magic for as little as $16 a month, after an initial down payment. The payment program is available only online and complete information is available at www.disneyworld.com/payments.

Cherished ‘Main Street Electrical Parade’ Features New Sights and Sounds During Special Engagement

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – As Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” extends its limited engagement at Walt Disney World Resort, Magic Kingdom guests are being treated to lots of features never before seen – or heard – in Florida.

The cherished Disney entertainment spectacular, last seen at Walt Disney World Resort from 1999 into 2001, now showcases Tinker Bell on an all-new float, and her trail of pixie dust enchants all the parade floats with new beauty along the way.  The popular pixie waves from the basket of a balloon floating gracefully above a magical garden shimmering with fairy light.  There are new lighting effects, and the parade’s highly recognizable musical theme is brightened by new technology.
In addition, enhanced versions of two classic favorite units have returned to the lineup after a 13-year hiatus – the shimmering diamond mine of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” and the Pleasure Island haunts of “Pinocchio.”
WHAT: The parade twinkles with approximately half a million lights.  Of those, nearly 10,000 are new “pixie dust” lights spread over the 23 parade floats.  The new LED lights use one-quarter of the power of incandescent lights.  The Tinker Bell float alone has more than 25,000 points of light and 75 percent are powered by an LED source.
WHEN: Continuing after Aug. 14 for an unspecified time in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.
LIGHTS ON DEMAND: A new control system makes it possible, for the first time, for each light to be programmed individually.  One example is the new Tinker Bell float, which has 160 dimmers, by far the most of any parade float, to control the lighting.  Programming for this parade took approximately two months.
AN EVEN BETTER HOEDOWN: The unforgettable musical theme of the “Electrical Parade,” which has inspired several generations of Disneyland Resort guests to clap along, was adapted from a synthesizer piece known as “Baroque Hoedown,” written in 1967 by Gershon Kingsley and
Jean-Jaques Perrey.  Disney themes are superimposed over the original piece.  The distinctive “electro-syntho-magnetic” “Baroque Hoedown” has new audio technology that gives it a richer, fuller sound.

MAIN STREET ELECTRICAL PARADE FUN FACTS

  • More than 80 performers appear in each presentation of Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade.”
  • There are 11,000 lights on the dancers’ costumes alone.  Thanks to the energy-efficient LED lights, some of the dancers’ costumes now carry only one battery pack instead of two.
  • All the floats are battery-powered.  More than 500 batteries supply power for lighting, propulsion, audio and special effects.
  • Approximately five miles of wire is used throughout the floats.
  • The tallest float in the parade is the “Cinderella” clock tower, at 18.5 feet tall.
  • The Fireworks Finale float, the longest in the parade, has seven cars that span 118 feet.

MAIN STREET ELECTRICAL PARADE HISTORY

  • The original “Main Street Electrical Parade” premiered at Disneyland on June 17, 1972.
  • The parade was presented at Disneyland nearly every summer until 1996.
  • A version of the “Main Street Electrical Parade” was created for Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in 1977.
  • The Magic Kingdom version was presented until 1991 when it was replaced by “SpectroMagic” (“Main Street Electrical Parade” was refurbished for the opening of Disneyland Paris).
  • The original Disneyland “Main Street Electrical Parade” was transported to Florida and extensively refurbished for a limited engagement at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom from 1999 into 2001.
  • Following the conclusion of the parade’s limited engagement at Walt Disney World Resort, it premiered at Disney California Adventure in July 2001 as “Disney’s Electrical Parade.”
  • “Summer Nightastic!” in 2010 marked the start of a second limited-engagement return of the original Disneyland “Main Street Electrical Parade” to Walt Disney World Resort.
  • The parade has been performed more than 5,000 times at Disneyland Resort.
  • The original “Main Street Electrical Parade” floats were “flatter” and less three-dimensional than the current floats.  While new floats have been added through the years, some have been retired: “it’s a small world” float, Briny Deep float, and special anniversary floats for Disneyland’s 25th anniversary (1980) and Mickey Mouse’s 60th birthday (1988), and the Blue Fairy float (replaced by the Tinker Bell float).
  • One of the original floats, the Title Drum Unit near the beginning of the parade, was created using an actual bass drum, one of the world’s largest in 1972.  This drum had been used in Disneyland parades in the 1960s, when Mickey Mouse used to beat it using large drumsticks.
  • A third version of the parade has been presented at Tokyo Disney Resort (premiering 1985).

Disney Season Holidays 2010: Walt Disney World Resort Offers Sleighful of Merriment with Festive Holiday Favorites Galore

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — From a sparkling ice castle and symphony of dazzling lights … to legendary international customs and wondrous displays … to magical entertainment and musical delights, Walt Disney World Resort unwraps an enchanting celebration of the holiday season in 2010.

Electrifying fireworks, charming parades and all the sounds of the season help transform the 40-square-mile resort into a winter wonderland where holiday fun begins as early as Nov. 8.  Guests who believe “there’s no place like home for the holidays” can enjoy the merriment at Disney and still curl up in a cozy place at home for Christmas … while other guests can spend the holidays at Mickey’s place, since many seasonal happenings continue through Jan. 3, 2011.

Disney’s stocking full of cheer includes:

Magic Kingdom

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
– On 19 magical nights between Nov. 8 and
Dec. 19, holiday revelers can sip cocoa, catch a “snowflake” on a fingertip and catch the spirit of the season through enchanting entertainment that includes live shows, fireworks, carolers and special character meet and greets.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on select evenings (after regular Magic Kingdom closing), is pure, time-honored Disney magic:

Dancing gingerbread, marching soldiers and Santa’s sleigh parade down Main Street, U.S.A. to seasonal melodies during the twice-nightly “Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade” … Cinderella Castle is draped radiantly with 200,000 glistening white lights … and “Holiday Wishes, Celebrate the Spirit of the Season” fireworks lights the night sky during a pyrotechnics show orchestrated to holiday melodies.

The night wouldn’t be complete without the forecasted flurry of snowflakes along Main Street, U.S.A. and a warming cup of cocoa in hand.  Party-goers also enjoy complimentary cookies and apple slices and enjoy unlimited admission to favorite attractions.

This after-hours family-friendly outing takes place Nov. 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 28, 30 and Dec. 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 19.  The evening kicks off at 7 p.m. and continues until midnight.  Day-of-party ticket pricing is $59.95 ($53.95 for ages 3-9).  Advance tickets are available with $6 savings for most dates.  Guests can visit Disneyworld.com/christmasparty or call 407/W-DISNEY.

Castle Dream Lights – When daylight has passed during the holiday season, Magic Kingdom guests can behold a breathtaking transformation during the Castle Dream Lights ceremony.  Each evening Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011, Cinderella and favorite characters decked out in holiday garb take to the stage and magically transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace aglow with 200,000 white lights – a perfect centerpiece to a park all decked out with wreaths, bows, garland and towering Christmas trees.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Spectacle of Dancing Lights – Millions of brilliant bulbs blanket the backlot with dancing lights and animated displays synchronized to high-energy holiday tunes at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011.

Colorful wreaths, twirling carousels, flying angels and Santa and his reindeer bedazzle park-goers amid swirling snow flurries during The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, a megawatt, multi-colored spectacle that Show Director John Phelan calls “the ultimate Americana Holiday lights display.”

“Imagine it,” Phelan said.  “One private citizen (Jennings Osborne), overwhelmed by the spirit of the season, created his own ‘Holiday Wonderland,’ complete with a giant rotating globe with ‘Peace on Earth’ above it and a massive canopy of red lights that people could walk under.  He said he wanted the people to feel like they were inside the lights, looking out.  Only in America!”

In fact, originally it was only in Little Rock, at the home of Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne.  The rich tradition began some 20 years ago when he strung 1,000 lights as a Christmas gift to his daughter.  After the exhibit grew larger and brighter – into millions of lights – it was transported to Walt Disney World Resort in 1995, where the light display now delights guests from all over the world each year.

Epcot

Holidays Around the World Throughout World Showcase, storytellers share customs and lore from their heritage from Nov. 26-Dec. 30.  Strolling around the promenade during the Holidays Around the World celebration may put you face-to-face with the good-hearted witch La Befana, known in Italy for filling children’s shoes with treats, or the jolly gift-bearer Father Christmas in the United Kingdom.  There are meet and greets with Santa and Mrs. Claus in The American Adventure, plus other legendary icons who share messages of goodwill.  The celebrations of Kwanzaa and Hanukkah are showcased as well.

The evening is capped by the visual splendor of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” the mesmerizing Epcot spectacular featuring fireworks, laser and water – all spruced up for the season with a spirited holiday finale.

Candlelight Processional – The poignant story of Christmas unfolds during this renowned event featuring celebrity narrators, a mass choir and 50-piece live orchestra at America Gardens Theatre.  On Nov. 26, Isabella Rossellini is scheduled to lead off the star-studded celebrity lineup that later in the season is scheduled to include Whoopi Goldberg and Jodi Benson among others (lineup of narrators is subject to change without notice).  To ensure a seat for this joyous favorite, Candlelight Dinner packages are available with dinner at select Epcot restaurants, a special spot for fireworks viewing and guaranteed seating for the heartfelt Candlelight Processional.  For bookings call 407/WDW-DINE.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade – The wild side of Animal Kingdom blends with a playful spirit of the holidays during “Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade.”  Mickey and pals present seasonal melodies with a world beat twist during a whimsical cavalcade throughout the park.  The high-energy afternoon parade runs daily from Nov. 26, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011.

Santa Goofy’s Holiday Village is adorned with festive décor and perfectly trimmed Christmas trees and crooning carolers.  And Santa Goofy and spirited friends greet guests for photo opportunities.

Downtown Disney

Festival of the Seasons – Santa Claus is coming to town – to Downtown Disney, that is – and he’ll be meeting kids, listening to wishes and posing for pictures daily from Nov. 19 through Dec. 24 at Santa’s Chalet.

Santa is at the center of Festival of the Seasons, during which school choirs and bands often perform at the dock stage to help ring in the season … and shoppers can enjoy holiday gift buying every day.

With dozens of shops from boutiques to gigantic toy stores, there is something for every style and budget.  Tren-D has hip fashions and accessories, D Street offers all the latest Vinylmations, the World of Disney store showcases character, princess and pirate merchandise, and lots more.  And you could fill Santa’s sleigh with all the games and goodies at Once Upon a Toy.  There’s also Ghirardelli chocolates, Basin (soaps and bath products), LEGO Imagination Center and much more.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Will Open Doors to the Wonders of Hawaii for a Family Vacation Experience Only Disney Could Deliver

KO OLINA, Hawaii (July 22, 2010) – Beginning in fall 2011, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai?i will draw on the celebrated Disney magic, storytelling and service to create wonderful family vacation memories drawing on the beauty, fun, enchantment and traditions of the islands.

“Aulani celebrates the best of Hawaii and represents a new way to enjoy a family vacation with Disney,” said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  “We believe the tremendous beauty of Ko Olina provides the perfect opportunity to create a uniquely Disney experience for our guests in a way that is true to Hawaii.”

Aulani draws its inspiration from the traditions and heritage of the people of Hawaii.  Walt
Disney Imagineers, with the help of local architects, artisans and historians, are weaving Hawaiian stories into the buildings, interiors, art and gardens of the resort.

“There are so many wonderful stories to tell in Hawaii,” Staggs said, “and with the help of local experts we’re excited to bring them to life for guests in our new resort.”

Each day of their stay, Aulani guests will be able to customize their experience – relaxing on the beach, playing in the pools, discovering the island on a specially planned excursion, gathering at the fire pit for storytelling, or spotting the statues of Menehune, the legendary island little people, hidden throughout the resort.

“We want this resort destination to reflect the vibrant culture that surrounds it.  The name ‘Aulani’ expresses a connection to tradition and deep storytelling
and its roots are in this land right here,” said Joe Rohde, senior vice president, Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Aulani traditionally means “a messenger of a chief
one who delivers a message from a higher authority.”  The name Aulani was chosen to position the resort as a messenger of the “higher authority” that is Hawaii, its spirit and its culture.  “As the history and heritage of Hawaii are the inspiration for Aulani, we are committed to using our skills in design to put guests into these stories,” says Rohde.

Aulani is being built on 21 acres of oceanfront property in Ko Olina, adjacent to a crystal-blue lagoon and a white-sand beach.  Ko Olina is 17 miles from Honolulu International Airport and approximately 30 minutes from Waikiki.

Upon its completion, Aulani will include 359 traditional hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas in two towers, each featuring angled rooms offering thrilling views of the ocean, mountains and the magnificent grounds that Disney is creating.  Family-friendly resort amenities will include an 18,000-square-foot spa, two restaurants, a kids’ club (Aunty’s Beach House), a wedding lawn, a conference center, and a spectacularly themed pool area complete with swimming pool, wading pool, tube slides, sunset-facing hot tubs and a snorkel lagoon.

When Aulani opens its doors next year, it also will offer adventures that invite families to discover the island.  Guests can enjoy one-of-a-kind excursions that blend the wonders and excitement of Hawaii with the Disney tradition of storytelling.

Disney’s first resort in Hawaii, Aulani has been under construction since its blessing and groundbreaking ceremony in November 2008.  In April, the resort celebrated a major milestone: the end of its vertical construction.

‘Last Tour to Endor’ Party During Star Wars Celebration V Lets Guests Be ‘the First Among the Last’ to Experience Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Theme Park

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — When Darth Vader moonwalks and Donald Duck sports Imperial stormtrooper armor, something special must be happening.

With a heaping helping of Disney magic, the Star Wars galaxy will descend upon Walt Disney World Resort from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. on Aug. 14, 2010, for an exclusive party to let fans of the sci-fi saga provide a special send-off to Star Tours before the popular attraction “powers down” in preparation for a new, 3-D Star Wars adventure that will open in 2011 at Disneyland park in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

But before the blaster doors on the attraction close temporarily, Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park will host “Last Tour to Endor,” an after-hours, private event that will feature live entertainment, Disney characters in their favorite Star Wars attire, a special Star Wars-themed fireworks spectacular, the “Death Star Disco,” Jedi Training Academy, Star Wars trivia challenges and more.

And yes, Darth Vader may even moonwalk.

The Dark Lord of the Sith and his stormtroopers, known to many Disney guests for their Michael Jackson-like dance moves to songs like “Thriller” and “Beat It” during the popular “Hyperspace Hoopla” at the park’s annual Star Wars Weekends event, will take the stage during the “Last Tour to Endor” for a special edition of “Hyperspace Hoopla.” They will be joined by a cast of Star Wars characters moving and shaking to their favorite 1970s and 1980s dance tunes in the “Dance-Off with the Star Wars Stars.”

“Dance-Off with the Star Wars Stars” premiered several years ago and has since become a hit not only for Star Wars Weekends guests each year, but also for millions more on YouTube.  (See more detail about the “Dance-Off” at the “Last Tour to Endor” party below, including the scheduled cast of characters and tune selections.)

And while the Star Tours attraction serves as the galactic centerpiece of the celebration, “Last Tour to Endor” guests also will be able to enjoy other Disney’s Hollywood Studios attractions during the evening, including The Twilight Zone
Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, “The American Idol Experience,” Toy Story Mania!, The Great Movie Ride and more.

“Last Tour to Endor” tickets are $75 in advance, and will be $89 at the gate (if available). Advance tickets may be purchased online at starwarscelebration.com.

Here are some other fast facts about the “Last Tour to Endor” party*:
•This is the largest private party ever held during a Star Wars Celebration.
•Fans are encouraged to get into the Star Wars spirit and dress in their favorite Star Wars costume for the event.
•Special Star Wars-themed entertainment, created just for this party, will be showcased throughout evening.
•“Last Tour to Endor” event-exclusive memorabilia, collectibles and merchandise will be available for purchase at the party.
•Just like during Star Wars Weekends, Mickey Mouse and his pals plan to join the fun by dressing up as their favorite saga characters. Mickey Mouse becomes Jedi Mickey; Donald Duck becomes Stormtrooper Donald; Goofy does his best Darth Vader impersonation, and Minnie Mouse dons a honeybun-style wig and white dress in honor of Princess Leia.
•Free round-trip shuttles to the event from the Orange County Convention Center will be offered for Star Wars Celebration attendees.
•A salute to the Star Tours attraction will cap the evening in grand fashion.
•While the party officially begins at 8 p.m., “Last Tour to Endor” ticket holders can get a head-start on their theme park fun and enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios as early as 4 p.m.
•“Hyperspace Hoopla” will feature Star Wars characters stepping outside of their galaxy and putting on a display of dancing like never before. Here’s the lineup scheduled for the “Last Tour of Endor” party:

“Grease is the word” that Chewie heard: Chewbacca, Han Solo and the Jawas put on their dancing shoes (except Chewbacca, of course, who will be frantically moving his furry feet) and perform a tune from the 1978 hit movie-musical “Grease.” In fact, Rebel spies have provided initial intel that Chewbacca’s fur will be fashioned into a 1950s pompadour hairstyle just for the occasion.

Nobody puts Leia in a corner”: Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia will go back to the 1980s with a dance number from the box-office hit “Dirty Dancing.”

Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it”: Some of the most famous females from the Star Wars saga — including Queen Amidala, Ahsoka Tano, Zam Wessel and Aurra Sing — will join forces for an ensemble dance number set to one of the biggest pop hits by the “material girl” herself, Madonna.

King of Pop, or King of the Dark Side?: Returning by popular demand will be Darth Vader and his crew of dancing stormtroopers, cutting a rug (and no, not cutting it with a light saber) to a hit medley from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. At previous “Hyperspace Hooplas,” the Dark Lord has been known to even don a single, sequined glove as he channels the iconic music superstar.

Walt Disney World Resort Offers Sleighful of Merriment with Festive Holiday Favorites Galore

About Haitian National Women’s U-17 Team

When an earthquake caused massive destruction to Haiti, the Under 17 Haitian Girl’s National Soccer team was faced with devastation and many only had their teammates and soccer to turn to.  The team decided to play through the tragedy and attempt to qualify for the U17 World Cup.  When the team fell short after losing two qualifier games in Costa Rica, the team returned home to Haiti not knowing what the future would hold or if the players would ever play soccer together again.  They have been reunited for the Disney International Cup.

Essence Communications Joins with Disney Parks, Steve Harvey to Help Take Disney’s Dreamers Academy to the ‘Next Level’

NEW ORLEANS (July 2, 2010) – Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey, a program created by Disney Parks to provide career-exploration and mentoring to high school teens, has gained another “voice” – another big, national voice: Through an agreement announced today with Essence Communications Inc., the annual event is being relaunched as Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine.
The program, which brings together 100 high school students from across the country for several days of interactive workshops and seminars, mentoring and inspiration focusing on careers and life enrichment (all sprinkled with Disney fun), will be convening its fourth class at Walt Disney World Resort in early 2011.
“Essence is closely aligned with Disney and Steve Harvey in supporting the mission of Disney’s Dreamers Academy and its commitment to positively impacting our youth,” said Angela Burt-Murray, editor-in-chief of Essence Magazine. “Disney’s Dreamers Academy is helping teens take steps in the right direction, and we want to be right there with the students, both encouraging them and sharing their stories.”
Tracey Walters-Powell, executive champion of the program for Disney Parks & Resorts, added, “Disney’s Dreamers Academy is a perfect platform to further the goal, shared by Disney Parks, Essence Communications and – it goes without saying – by Steve Harvey, to inspire children. We are genuinely excited about the possibilities ahead as Essence joins with Steve and Disney to take the initiative to the next level.”
Upon creating Disney’s Dreamers Academy in 2007, Disney joined forces with Harvey, a nationally syndicated radio personality, actor and best-selling author, to launch the initial nationwide search for high school students who possess a winning combination of attributes that reflect strong character and an attitude that will enable them to seek and take advantage of opportunities for their future.
Each fall since then, thousands of teens have been nominated by parents, teachers, school administrators, church groups and even the students themselves. A distinguished panel of leaders from communications, education, industry and entertainment – includingHarvey and Disney cast – reviews the applications and selects a Dreamers Academy class of 100 teens in grades 9 through 12.
“This is really such an amazing collaboration,” Harvey said. “We have the gold standard of international entertainment with Walt Disney World Resort. Essence is known the world over for being a clear and positive voice for African American women. Disney and Essence will bring these kids so much hope and show them the world is right at their fingertips if they learn how to dream. Disney’s Dreamers Academy is evolving into more than I even imagined it could be.”
As Disney, Essence Communications and Harvey formulate plans for the 2011 Disney’s Dreamers Academy, their collective minds will be to develop a program that inspires high school students to  “dream bigger, explore a world of possibilities and get started making those dreams a reality,” according to Disney’s Walters-Powell.
The “getting started” or “training” component being developed marks an elevation to the “next level,” she added.
“Motivation, inspiration is a building block,” she said. “Now we are going to add the nudge that puts these young people’s plans into action as they prepare for productive adult lives.”
Nominations for the Class of 2011 can be submitted from July 2-Oct. 31, 2010, with information about procedures at www.DisneysDreamersAcademy.com. The 100 high school students selected will travel to Walt Disney World Resort, near Orlando in central Florida, for Disney’s Dreamers Academy March 3-6, 2011.

Disney’s Field of Dreams

AAU youth baseball player beats cancer while playing

in National Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (June 30, 2010) – Thirteen-year-old Chris Siders of Pensacola, Fla., was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 11.  After multiple failed rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and beating cancer three separate times, Siders was placed on the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s wish list.  While his dream to meet former University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was granted, what he also wished for was to be back on the field with his AAU baseball team.

To help support Siders through his difficult time, his AAU baseball team shaved their heads when he lost his hair and carried around a cardboard photo of him to games and practices when he was too weak to make it.

Two years later, Siders has again defied the odds and he’s now an inspirational and active member of his AAU baseball team fighting for the AAU Baseball National Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.
